Asbestos Exposure in Tigard and Washington County

Tigard and the larger Washington County area are home to a large population of blue-collar workers in a wide variety of industries. Unfortunately, workers in many occupations have been exposed to asbestos on Washington County job sites.

Mechanics

Throughout the 20th century, manufacturers commonly used asbestos in auto parts due to the mineral’s durability and heat and fire resistance. Therefore, mechanics were exposed to asbestos while working on vehicles for decades. Even though asbestos use has been mostly restricted, older cars, imported cars, and after-market car parts may still contain asbestos, putting mechanics at risk today.

Pulp & Paper Mill Workers

Oregon’s lush forests made the state a major center for paper production. Thus, Washington County has been home to many pulp factories, paper mills, and lumber plants over the years. Unfortunately, asbestos exposure among paper mill workers and other lumber industry employees is common. Asbestos was used extensively in mill machinery components, piping, gaskets, boilers, and building materials. As these asbestos-containing materials were disturbed or degraded, mill workers inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers and have since developed mesothelioma.

Demolition and Construction Workers

Throughout most of the 20th century, many construction materials commonly contained asbestos. The mineral could be found in roofing materials, shingles, siding, insulation, flooring, cement products, and pipe coatings. Thus, many construction and demolition workers worked directly with the materials and were exposed on the job. Despite asbestos regulations in the United States significantly restricting the use of asbestos, there is still a significant risk for those who work on older buildings.

Shipyard Workers in Portland's Shipyards

Oregon’s bustling coastline has been home to for centuries. Beginning in the 1920s, asbestos was commonly used at shipyards. Insulation, boilers, gaskets, adhesives, and other essential ship components often contained asbestos. Unfortunately, an estimated 3.5 million American workers have been exposed to asbestos at shipyards, including many here in Oregon. Those who work on older ships are likely still exposed today.

Electricians

Electricians have regularly handled a wide range of products commonly insulated with asbestos, including cords, electrical panels, junction boxes, and capacitors. Asbestos was once considered an ideal insulator for electrical components to reduce the risk of electrical fires. However, its widespread usage exposed many electricians to asbestos on the job.

Plumbers & Pipefitters

Asbestos has historically been used in a wide variety of applications in plumbing and pipefitting. Pipe repair patches, gaskets, cement products, pipe insulation, rope and packing, and protective sprays have historically contained asbestos. Plumbers and pipefitters are virtually guaranteed to have been exposed to asbestos on the job until its use was largely restricted. They still face the risk of exposure in older buildings.

Firefighters

For decades, asbestos was used in firefighting equipment as a fireproofing agent. It was often woven into the fabric of firefighting uniforms, meaning that even simply moving could stir up asbestos fibers, enabling firefighters to inhale or ingest them. In addition, when buildings containing asbestos material burn or collapse, the mineral’s tiny fibers are released into the air, exposing firefighters. While personal protective equipment is no longer made with asbestos, firefighters are still exposed to asbestos during fires at older buildings.

Insulators

Asbestos insulation is one of the chief sources of asbestos exposure. Before the 1980s, a vast array of insulation materials used in construction, industrial, and maritime settings contained asbestos, regularly placing asbestos insulation workers in direct contact with the hazardous substance. Asbestos was so widely used by insulation manufacturers that insulators face an exceptionally high risk of developing mesothelioma. While asbestos use has largely been phased out, many older buildings still contain asbestos insulation, and insulation workers can still be exposed.

HVAC Workers

HVAC workers have been exposed to many of the same asbestos-containing building components as electricians, construction workers, and other tradespeople. HVAC workers commonly handle pipes, spackling, insulation, flooring, electrical components, and other construction materials required to build a functioning HVAC system. HVAC workers in older buildings are still at risk of asbestos exposure today.
